Vietnam is reinforcing its commitment to bolstering strategic relations with Laos, with Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng emphasizing the importance of transforming high-level agreements into practical benefits for both nations. During a meeting in Hanoi with Vilay Lakhamfong, a senior official from the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, Hưng highlighted the need for stronger economic ties and improved infrastructure connectivity between the two countries.
The Vietnamese leader pointed out that bilateral cooperation has grown more substantive and effective, underscoring the necessity of accelerating major infrastructure projects like the Hanoi–Vientiane expressway and the Vientiane–Vung Ang railway. Hưng also mentioned the significance of energy connectivity initiatives and progress on the proposed Laos–Vietnam Friendship University as part of their cooperative agenda.
Both nations reaffirmed their dedication to the Vietnam–Laos Cooperation Strategy for 2021–2030 and the bilateral governmental cooperation agreement for 2026–2030. They stressed the importance of regular high-level exchanges and closer coordination between ministries, local authorities, and businesses to achieve shared development goals.
Hưng expressed Vietnam’s support for Laos’ national development efforts, identifying opportunities in trade, investment, defense, security, education, science, technology, and tourism. He called for enhanced cooperation on regional and international issues through platforms such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the United Nations.
In anticipation of the 2027 milestone marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam–Laos Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, both sides are making preparations for the Vietnam–Laos Year of Friendship and Strategic Cohesion. This initiative aims to celebrate and promote the countries’ historic ties, especially among younger generations.
Vilay Lakhamfong expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s support, affirming Laos’ commitment to maintaining the bilateral relationship. He emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration on regional security, stability, and economic development. The leaders expressed confidence that their strengthened partnership would enhance political trust, advance mutual development objectives, and contribute to peace and stability in the region.
