Manchester City missed the opportunity to close the gap on Arsenal when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday. With Arsenal not playing until Thursday against Liverpool, City could have reduced the deficit but instead saw it remain at five points after their third consecutive league match without a win.
Erling Haaland gave City the lead from the penalty spot four minutes before halftime after Diego Gomez fouled Jeremy Doku in the box. VAR confirmed the decision, and Haaland converted to score his 150th goal for Manchester City. The strike ended his three-match goal drought and took his Premier League tally for the season to 20.
The second half saw City push for a crucial second goal. Bernardo Silva had an excellent chance when he capitalized on a Brighton defensive error, but his shot struck the post. The match became increasingly physical, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper engaging in a heated confrontation that resulted in yellow cards for both.
Brighton equalized in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who demonstrated excellent composure and technique. The Japanese winger received a pass from the flank, took a touch at the edge of the box, and curled a low shot into the far corner with precision.
The visitors took control after scoring, dictating the tempo and creating several opportunities to claim victory. Mitoma nearly turned from scorer to provider when he found Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s shot was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s follow-up attempt from near the goal line struck the post. In stoppage time, Haaland had a clear chance to secure all three points when he broke through one-on-one with Verbruggen, but the Brighton goalkeeper’s superb save ensured the spoils were shared.
