Vietnam and Azerbaijan are set to deepen their strategic partnership following high-level talks in Hanoi. Vietnam’s General Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee and President To Lam emphasized the importance of strengthening the traditional friendship and strategic alliance with Azerbaijan during a meeting with Azerbaijani presidential envoy Elchin Amirbayov.
During the discussions, To Lam reflected on Azerbaijan’s historical support for Vietnam during its independence struggle and subsequent national development. He proposed expanding cooperation to achieve shared development goals and bolster regional and international peace and stability. The Vietnamese leader pointed to his state visit to Azerbaijan in May 2025, where the bilateral relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership, as a significant milestone. He advocated for stronger political trust and the effective implementation of existing agreements to yield mutual benefits.
Amirbayov commended Vietnam’s rapid development and its growing international presence. He reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to enhancing the longstanding friendship between the two nations, a relationship nurtured by their former national leaders and maintained by successive generations. The two leaders agreed to increase high-level exchanges, improve bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and encourage greater involvement from government agencies, businesses, and local authorities.
The talks highlighted key areas for expanded cooperation, including trade, investment, oil and gas, renewable energy, transport, logistics, science and technology, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides also discussed the importance of strengthening coordination and mutual support at international organizations and multilateral forums, such as the United Nations and the Non-Aligned Movement. They expressed a shared commitment to promoting global peace, stability, and cooperation.
During the meeting, Amirbayov conveyed greetings from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to To Lam, who extended an invitation to President Aliyev and his spouse to visit Vietnam. The dialogue reflects a mutual desire to build upon the historical ties and foster a strategic partnership that supports both nations’ aspirations on the global stage.
