Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in nurturing ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized Vietnam’s pivotal contributions to the summit’s success, which included bolstering ASEAN’s central role and aiding efforts to deepen the bloc’s strategic partnership with Russia.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation stressed the importance of dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Furthermore, Vietnam proposed broadening collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These efforts aim to enhance the ASEAN-Russia partnership, which is set to be strengthened through newly adopted frameworks targeting cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a primary pillar.
Reflecting its dedication to fostering regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative signifies Vietnam’s commitment to nurturing future diplomatic relations and regional alliances. The outcomes of the summit are expected to bolster ASEAN–Russia ties, contribute to regional stability, and unlock new avenues for economic growth and collaboration across Eurasia.
In a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng and Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated their commitment to enhancing the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their discussions centered on expanding cooperation in areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport, highlighting the robust and multifaceted nature of the bilateral relationship.
