In a significant diplomatic engagement on September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng hosted Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Hà Nội, marking the latter’s inaugural visit to Vietnam as president. The two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral relations and broadening cooperation across a range of sectors. Prime Minister Hưng expressed Vietnam’s continued support for Myanmar’s pursuit of stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth.
President Min Aung Hlaing commended Vietnam for its impressive socio-economic advancements and increasing influence both regionally and internationally. He articulated a keen interest in drawing lessons from Vietnam’s developmental strategies and reaffirmed Myanmar’s dedication to maintaining a longstanding friendship and comprehensive collaboration with Vietnam. Both leaders acknowledged the recent advancements in their bilateral relations and resolved to bolster high-level exchanges and political trust.
The meeting underscored the importance of defence and security as vital components of their partnership. The two nations aim to tackle cross-border challenges such as cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking, while also expanding military training programs and exchanges among young officers. Economic collaboration was another focal point, with discussions on enhancing trade and updating agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar extended an invitation to Vietnamese investors to explore opportunities in sectors like telecommunications, digital transformation, and high-tech agriculture.
Additionally, the leaders discussed initiatives to improve infrastructure and air connectivity, including the restoration of direct flights and the development of joint tourism ventures such as spiritual and medical tourism. On regional issues, Vietnam reiterated its commitment to working with ASEAN partners to ensure ongoing dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both countries emphasized the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and in line with international law.
Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to partake in the CLMV Summit and preside over the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội in November 2026. In return, the Myanmar president invited Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time, further solidifying their commitment to deepening ties between the two nations.
