Thailand’s push towards enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) adoption is crucial for maintaining its competitive edge and boosting productivity across various sectors. Experts at a recent forum in Bangkok emphasized the need for the nation to accelerate its AI initiatives, improve digital skills, and foster better cooperation between government entities, academic institutions, and the business community.
Leading the discussion, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Yodchanan Wongsawat, underscored the importance of focusing on specialized technological capabilities. He suggested that Thailand should prioritize sectors like agriculture, biodiversity, and environmental technology, which generate valuable local data, rather than competing with larger economies in mass production. Yodchanan stressed that education is pivotal in realizing this vision, calling for a stronger emphasis on mathematics, science, and creative thinking.
Bangkok Bank executive Kobsak Pootrakool echoed the sentiment, highlighting that businesses need to leverage AI for productivity improvements rather than treating it as a mere showcase technology. He pointed out that well-organized and reliable data infrastructure is essential for successful AI integration. Furthermore, Kobsak noted the increasing role of automation, robotics, and AI in manufacturing, urging both businesses and the government to invest in technological advancements, data systems, and regulatory frameworks.
Jirayut Srupsrisopa, founder of Bitkub Capital Group, advocated for an AI-first approach across Thailand’s economy. He argued that such a strategy could help businesses overcome demographic and workforce challenges by significantly enhancing productivity. The panelists collectively agreed that stronger educational foundations, robust data infrastructure, effective regulation, and enhanced public-private partnerships are vital to translating technological advances into economic growth.
As Thailand navigates its path towards greater AI adoption, the emphasis remains on developing sectors where the country can leverage its unique strengths and data capabilities. This strategic focus aims to ensure that technological progress contributes to broader economic development and sustainability.
