The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has been pivotal in fostering a robust partnership between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 has served as Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite, transitioning to operational control in September of the same year. Originally expected to function for five years, the satellite remarkably continues to operate in 2026, entering its 14th year of service. This enduring operation underscores significant advancements not only in satellite operations but also in broader technological capabilities.
Through this program, Vietnamese engineers have gained substantial expertise, having undergone rigorous training in both France and Vietnam between 2011 and 2013. This training equipped them with critical skills in system design, operations, and troubleshooting, enabling them to independently address technical challenges. The program marked a shift from following transferred procedures to developing indigenous solutions, reflecting an important step towards technological self-reliance.
Domestically, Vietnam has established a comprehensive remote-sensing system capable of handling imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has delivered nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security activities. This progress has laid the groundwork for future satellite projects, as noted by Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology President Trần Hồng Thái, who emphasized the need for further development in satellite design and associated technologies.
A significant milestone in this bilateral cooperation came during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to engage in long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation. This new phase aims to explore next-generation Earth observation systems and a potential VNREDSat-2, with a stronger focus on Vietnamese involvement in mission planning and system development.
The future of this cooperation envisions Vietnam moving from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing them, thereby mastering the technology. Emphasis will be placed on Vietnamese scientists and engineers enhancing their capabilities in areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, and ground systems. By building stronger domestic expertise, Vietnam aims to independently design, operate, and develop future satellite technologies, marking a significant stride towards technological autonomy.
