Vietnam and Laos have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering bilateral cooperation and strategic ties, as Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Lao National Assembly President Sonexay Siphandone met in Vientiane on October 8. This meeting underscored the importance of the longstanding friendship, special solidarity, and strategic partnership between the two neighboring countries.
During Prime Minister Hưng’s first official visit to Laos since taking office, both leaders praised progress in various sectors, including politics, defense, security, foreign affairs, trade, and investment. They also recognized the significance of cooperation in education, transport, energy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, emphasizing the need for translating diplomatic understanding into concrete outcomes.
Key discussions centered around accelerating economic cooperation projects and improving the business environment to encourage investment. Prime Minister Hưng urged the Lao National Assembly to support policies that would mobilize resources and enhance development project implementation, creating favorable conditions for businesses from both nations.
The leaders highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between their national legislatures, promoting exchanges of delegations, sharing legislative experiences, and coordinating at regional and international parliamentary forums. People-to-people exchanges, particularly among younger generations, were identified as a priority to promote awareness of shared history and strengthen public understanding of bilateral friendship.
Looking ahead, preparations are underway for the Vietnam–Laos and Laos–Vietnam Year of Solidarity, Friendship and Cohesion in 2027, marking the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation. Both leaders emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties amid changing regional and international conditions, pledging to continue coordinated efforts on development priorities for the benefit of their peoples.
