As Vietnam and Norway approach the 55th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, both nations are set to bolster their cooperation in trade, renewable energy, and maritime development. In a recent meeting in Hanoi, Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Thi Thu Hang and Norwegian State Secretary Astrid Bergmål reaffirmed their commitment to deepening economic and diplomatic ties.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the conclusion of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) member states, after 14 years of discussions. Hang emphasized the importance of ratification and preparation for implementation, which is anticipated to enhance market access and investor certainty.
The discussions also emphasized the potential of the Green Strategic Partnership, signed in April, to foster sustainable development and an energy transition. Vietnam urged Norwegian businesses and financial institutions to increase investments in sectors such as renewable energy, maritime transport, and high-tech aquaculture. Norway, for its part, expressed interest in expanding cooperation in marine management, sustainable aquaculture, and green shipping.
The meeting also covered regional cooperation, with both countries agreeing to collaborate more closely within the ASEAN-Norway partnership framework for 2026–2030. This cooperation will focus on areas such as the blue economy, energy transition, and sustainable development. Furthermore, Vietnam and Norway pledged to support each other in international forums, including the United Nations, underscoring the importance of free trade and international law.
The talks underscored a mutual commitment to expanding economic opportunities and advancing sustainable development, highlighting the shared goals of both nations as they strengthen their diplomatic relations.
