Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, a momentous development as the two nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. This move underscores their commitment to bolster political, economic, and technological collaboration.
During a visit by Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, the two countries inked four significant agreements. These cover areas such as economic cooperation, advancements in science and technology, education, and aviation development. Additionally, both nations have set forth a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for the years 2026 to 2031, aiming to broaden their cooperative efforts across various sectors.
In the realm of security and defense, Thailand and Vietnam pledged to enhance their cooperation, focusing on combating transnational crimes like online scams and illegal fishing. They emphasized the importance of closer economic collaboration to navigate global economic uncertainties and support growth in the private sector. Their shared objective is to surpass the current bilateral trade volume of approximately $22.1 billion, with an ambitious target of reaching $24 billion soon.
Technological innovation and future industries emerged as focal points of this partnership. The countries plan to deepen their collaboration in fields such as satellite technology, semiconductors, and agricultural biotechnology. In addition, they agreed to promote integration within supply chains, boost local economic connectivity, and enhance cooperation in green energy. These efforts aim to reinforce regional competitiveness and ensure energy security.
