Vietnam is urging enhanced collaboration with Japan in strategic technological fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy. Additionally, Vietnam seeks increased support for workforce development. These proposals were discussed in a meeting on September 3 between Vietnamese science and technology officials and a delegation from Japan’s House of Representatives. The dialogue concentrated on semiconductor research, AI, energy technologies, personnel training, and fostering closer business ties within strategic technology sectors.
The NEXUS joint research program serves as a platform for Vietnam and Japan to co-fund semiconductor research, which includes chip design, advanced materials, and manufacturing technologies. The countries aim to expand this cooperation further starting in 2027. Vietnam is also seeking Japan’s assistance in developing sovereign AI capabilities and large language models in the Vietnamese language. A joint working group from both nations is anticipated to convene in October to advance technology transfer and strengthen business connections in the semiconductor industry.
Vietnam proposed the expansion of the NEXUS program into an annual cooperation mechanism, with a broader focus on AI, new materials, renewable energy, and biomedicine. It also emphasized the importance of forging closer business partnerships and enhancing training initiatives for highly skilled engineers and experts in key technology fields. Discussions also touched on Japan’s interest in Vietnam’s semiconductor development, labor policies, and long-term energy strategy, which includes plans to expand nuclear power capabilities.
Vietnam is pursuing a diversified energy strategy that incorporates conventional energy sources alongside renewables and nuclear power, including research into small modular reactors. The country stressed that its transition to a more sustainable energy mix will demand substantial investment and a highly skilled workforce. Vietnam expressed optimism that Japan would remain a pivotal partner in developing the necessary energy infrastructure to support its burgeoning high-tech industries.
