Vietnam and Switzerland have taken significant steps to enhance their Comprehensive Partnership, focusing on trade, investment, and scientific collaboration, following Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s recent official visit to Vietnam. This visit coincided with the 55th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic relations, underscoring their commitment to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
A pivotal outcome of the discussions was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Switzerland is a member. This agreement aims to improve market access, bolster business expansion, and create opportunities for stronger trade and investment once it comes into force.
The leaders from both nations emphasized strengthening political dialogue and economic ties, particularly prioritizing sectors such as green finance, digital technology, sustainable tourism, and workforce development. They also highlighted the importance of expanding exchanges between government agencies, businesses, universities, and research organizations.
In addition to trade and investment, the partnership aims to foster joint research and technology transfer in fields like biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. Collaboration between government institutions, universities, and businesses is expected to drive innovation and support the commercial application of research.
The two countries are also looking to enhance educational partnerships, drawing on Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. This will involve exchanges of experts, researchers, and students, further strengthening ties between the two nations.
Both Vietnam and Switzerland reaffirmed their support for sustainable development, free trade, and multilateral cooperation within a rules-based international order. They expressed confidence that closer collaboration would not only support economic growth but also contribute to regional and global stability.
