The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has significantly strengthened the collaboration between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology, setting the stage for future endeavors that include next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, VNREDSat-1 has served as Vietnam’s inaugural Earth observation satellite. Although originally designed to last five years, it continues to function in 2026, marking an impressive 14 years in operation.
Beyond satellite operation, the program has been instrumental in advancing Vietnam’s technical expertise. From 2011 to 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operation, and troubleshooting. This training empowered them to tackle technical challenges independently, transitioning from merely following transferred procedures to devising their own solutions.
Vietnam has also developed a comprehensive remote-sensing system that encompasses imaging requests, satellite control, as well as data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images that support environmental monitoring, disaster management, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security operations. According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a crucial foundation for technical and human resources aimed at future satellite projects. However, achieving greater technological self-reliance will necessitate advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.
A new chapter of cooperation unfolded during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. At this event, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies signed a declaration of intent to pursue long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation. These partners are now considering a next-generation Earth observation system along with technological options for a proposed VNREDSat-2.
Future collaborative efforts are anticipated to focus more on Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. This includes opportunities for Vietnam to bolster domestic expertise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering the technology, thereby enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to gradually design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop new generations of satellite technology independently.
